District Announcements

2018-04-13

Very recently, some information has appeared on social media concerning highly disturbing communications and on-line posts apparently made by a now-deceased resident of Hazelton, PA to randomly-targeted and innocent school students and their families throughout the United States, including two families within our District.  This now-deceased Hazelton resident has no other connection with our District.

At the recommendation of the Executive Director of our Delaware County Intermediate Unit, we are sharing with you updated information that she received yesterday afternoon from the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office.

In substance, the Marple Township Police Department and the Delaware County Criminal Investigation Division promptly investigated these highly disturbing communications and on-line posts and determined that they had been generated by this Hazleton resident.  On April 9, 2018, the Hazleton Police Department identified this Hazelton resident and responded to his Hazelton residence to further investigate.  Upon the arrival of the police officers, this Hazelton resident fired gun shots at the police officers and thereafter committed suicide.

Last evening, we conferred with Chief Murray of the Marple Township Police Department, who informed us that this now-deceased Hazelton resident appears to have been a lone actor and that his death appears to have ended the public safety threat he had posed.

We thank our law enforcement officials in both Marple and Newtown, in the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office, and throughout our Commonwealth who work so diligently, at great risk, to protect our students and families.  And as these recent incidents painfully remind us, we continue to encourage all members of our school community to immediately report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities for prompt investigation.  As the public safety adage goes, “If you see or hear something, say something.”
